A New Orleans police officer was shot Sunday night in the 3300 block of Alvar Street in the Desire neighborhood.
Law enforcement sources identified the officer as Derek Frick, a 24-year veteran who was promoted last month to commander in charge of the Management Services Bureau.
He was shot in the neck and jaw area and was taken to University Medical Center.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu said Frick was awake and talking and was in stable condition.
Landrieu said another vehicle pulled up by Frick’s and someone started shooting. There was no word on who did the shooting.
Frick was shot about 7:45 p.m.
He was off-duty and was not wearing a police uniform, NOPD spokesman Officer Juan Barnes said. He was driving an unmarked police vehicle.
