Special Connections, a Kenner-based nonprofit organization organized in 2004 to serve the needs of developmentally challenged adults, will sponsor a spring fashion show and luncheon April 27 at The Cannery, 3803 Toulouse St., in New Orleans.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and the event begins at 11 a.m. Members of Special Connections will serve as models. There also will be door prizes, a parade of prizes and a 50/50 drawing. Table centerpieces, made by members of Special Connections, will be for sale.

Tickets are $35 per person; reservations are required by Friday.

Members of Special Connections meet weekdays at Vineyard Christian Church, 4340 Sal Lentini Blvd., in Kenner for activities such as bowling, video games, art, exercise, movies, field trips and sign language instruction.

Preschoolers at library

Young Audiences and the Jefferson Parish Library will hold a special program this weekend for preschool children.

“Community Arts and Literacy Day: a Day of Art and Literacy” will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Gretna Library, 102 Willow Drive.

The event will feature puppetry, storytelling, movement and theater activities with Rebecca Frank and Amauunet Ashe.

A free book will be given to all children who attend, and light snacks will be served.

The event is free and open to the public.

Concert at St. Matthew

A musical variety concert, sponsored by St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the church, 6017 Camphor St., in Metairie.

Those scheduled to perform include Maggie Probst, John Lacey, Amelia Jacquat, Claire Jacquat, the Mardi Gras Barbershop Chorus, Kirk Hanson, Stevie and Steve Cavalier, The Jubilee Band and the Southern Tradition Barbershop Quartet.

The program is free and open to the public.

Resource fair Saturday

Families Helping Families of Jefferson is collaborating with the Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority, the Louisiana Workforce Commission and the Jefferson Parish Public School System for the third annual Jefferson Parish Resource Fair planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Clearview Shopping Center, 4436 Veterans Memorial Blvd., in Metairie.

The event will provide information and assistance for people of all ages with disabilities.

There will be informational booths and tables around the shopping center with information on such topics as vocational rehabilitation, education resources, independent living, employment and early intervention.

Free health screenings

The Hispanic Apostolate Community Services organization will provide free health screenings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hispanic Apostolate, 2505 Maine Ave., in Metairie.

Services include screenings for children’s hearing and dental, HIV, blood pressure, osteoporosis and diabetes. Also, there will be free pregnancy tests and counseling, flu shots, blood pressure and body fat determinations. There will be information on nutrition and healthy cooking, stress and anger management and smoking cessation.
