I am excited to announce that early sign-up for our much-loved annual Summer Reading Program is scheduled to begin May 15, with kickoff parties scheduled at each of our 14 library locations on May 31 and June 1, depending on the library location.
Early signup and details on the kickoff parties can be found by visiting our website, http://www.neworleanspubliclibrary.org.
Our Summer Reading Program provides rewards and programs to encourage school-age youth to continue reading over the summer. Kids who do not read at least four grade-level books in the summer will lose two months’ worth of reading skills, which has been called the educational “summer slump.”
This theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program is “Dig into Reading” for those 11 and younger, and “Beneath the Surface” for children 12-18. Every child who signs up and participates will earn prizes for reading eight books or 800 pages.
In addition to reading, the Summer Reading Program offers fun, safe and free activities throughout the summer, including library visits from Wetlands Express, the Bugmobile, Red Ball Express, and special music performances from Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra musicians.
Through magic shows, story times, crafts and many other programs, children who participate will learn about gardening, archaeology, food chains and more, all related to the themes of “Dig Into Reading” and “Beneath The Surface.”
Teens can join us for nail art, glitter tattoos, duct tape wallets and other crafts. Teens can win a $100 gift card and see their design on summer reading program T-shirts by entering our Teen Reading Program T-Shirt Design Contest by May 22.
To enter the design contest, download the application from our website or pick up an entry form at your local branch.
With so many free and fun programs and events scheduled, we are fighting hard to make sure that no child has to experience the “summer slump.”
