Ex-boyfriend fatally shot in home invasion
A Metairie man was shot and killed Sunday as he tried to force his ex-girlfriend from the River Ridge home of her current boyfriend, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
Bobby Edler, 44, was shot to death by Robert Esteves inside Esteves’ home in the 9400 block of Sharla Drive, said Glen Boyd, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.
Esteves was wounded during an exchange of gunfire, Boyd said.
Authorities said Esteves is the boyfriend of Karen Collins, 35, who was Edler’s ex-girlfriend.
Collins called the Sheriff’s Office about 4:30 a.m. Sunday to say her ex-boyfriend was shooting at her current boyfriend inside his home, Boyd said.
Collins reported that she was at a neighbor’s home. When deputies arrived, they found Edler in a pool of blood just inside the door. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Collins told deputies that she and Esteves returned home from a Christmas party and went to bed. Somehow, Edler got into Esteves’ home, made his way to the bedroom and ordered Collins out of bed at gunpoint. Edler then took Collins to the front door.
Esteves got a shotgun and fired at least twice at Edler from a second-story landing overlooking the foyer. Edler returned multiple rounds before he was fatally wounded at the front door, Boyd said.
Esteves sustained a gunshot wound to his arm. He was treated at a local hospital. Deputies took Collins in for more questioning, Boyd said.
The incident remained under investigation Sunday evening, and no charges were immediately filed.
