Two shot to death in New Orleans

Two minutes after a lightning bolt crashed through the Algiers air about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, someone came to the door of a residence in the 400 block of Slidell Street and beckoned Anthony Chambers, a 23-year-old employee of Magazine Pizza, to the front porch.

Sam Dixon, 64, said he watched as his great-nephew went outside and quickly returned. Then a man broke through the door and shot Chambers, Dixon said. As his great-nephew struggled with the first shooter on the porch, Dixon said, another man came up and finished the job.

The shooters then “casually walked off the porch, got in a car, and drove off,” Dixon said.

Chambers died at the scene. Police have not announced any suspects or arrests in the case.

Chambers had turned 23 on Dec. 16. His great-grandmother, Hazel Davis, 83, remembered how the young man sat with her and ate chocolate cake last week to celebrate — “just the two of us.”

“Raised him from a little boy, so you know I’m hurting,” Davis said. She, too, was there when Chambers was shot.

Meanwhile, another man was shot a few minutes earlier Wednesday morning on the east bank.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office identified the victim of a shooting in the 3400 block of Pleasure Street, near the former Desire housing development, as Darnelle Demourelle, 30. Arriving officers found Demourelle dead inside a house about 12:25 a.m.

One neighbor who declined to give her name said she fled to her closet with her children when she heard what sounded to her like 50 gunshots.

“The shots didn’t stop coming,” the woman said. “I’m tired of not being able to sleep.”

The two fatal shootings marked the 156th and 157th killings of the year in New Orleans.

Avondale man, 20, killed in Marrero crash

One person was killed in a crash Tuesday night in Marrero, officials said.

The crash happened about 11:20 p.m. on U.S. 90 near Old Man River Road, State Police said. Ngoc Dinh, 20, of Avondale, died in the crash.

According to State Police, Dinh was driving a 1999 Nissan Maxima westbound on U.S. 90 when the vehicle crossed over the raised median and entered the eastbound lanes. It then traveled into the grassy area past the shoulder and struck an unoccupied tractor-trailer parked beyond there. Dinh was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers determined that his vehicle had two bald tires in the rear. In addition, the road was wet because of heavy rain.

Dinh was wearing a seat belt, State Police said. Toxicology results are pending an autopsy.

Suspect arrested in Ramelli Group robbery

Police said they arrested Pierre Walters, 21, in connection with an armed robbery at the Ramelli Group in the 7000 block of Washington Avenue about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said Walters walked into the business and held a gun to the head of a 45-year-old man while demanding a check from another man. Walters threatened to shoot the first victim if the second man did not comply, police alleged.

Xavier University police later spotted Walters walking near the McDonald’s parking lot on South Carrollton Avenue, NOPD spokesman Tyler Gamble said, and he was taken into custody.

A judge ordered Walters held on $200,000 bail on two counts of armed robbery.
