Father almost drowns in Lake Pontchartrain

A man was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday after almost drowning while trying to rescue his two children from Lake Pontchartrain, according to Officer Hilal Williams, a spokeswoman for the New Orleans Police Department.

Williams said two children were playing on the steps near the lake in the 1800 block of Lakeshore Drive about 11 a.m. when one of the children, 8, fell in.

The other child, whose age is unknown, jumped in after the 8-year-old, as did the father, Williams said.

She said a bystander then jumped in the lake as well, pulling the children out.

The father did not surface, according to Williams, and was found underwater by two firefighters after the Fire Department responded to the scene.

She said EMS technicians were able to revive the man, who was taken to a hospital.

The children were checked out at the scene and were not hospitalized, according to Williams.
