Police are looking for clues in the late night killing of a 42-year-old Kenner father of three who was gunned down in front of his family’s home.
Cornel Woods, 42, was shot on the 900 block of 27th Street in Kenner around 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday. He was taken to Ochsner Medical Center in Kenner, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Neighbor Herbert Lipscomb, 52, said he had just left a house across the street that he was working on when he saw a wounded Woods stumble around his white Ford F-150, which was parked in the driveway of his mother’s house.
“I’ve been shot! Call the police!” Woods shouted out.
Lipscomb said he called 911 and told the dispatcher to send an ambulance immediately. As he was dying, Woods pointed to where he had been shot below his heart.
His mother, Louise Woods, said her son had returned to Kenner about a year ago after moving to Texas after Hurricane Katrina.
Cornel Woods had three boys between the ages of 12 to 16, she said. He was a hard-working handyman who always kept a job and could do a little bit of everything, including paint, hang sheetrock and install flooring. She was enjoying finally having her son back under her own roof.
“We loved him very much,” she said, her voice cracking.
Kenner Police spokesman Lt. Brian McGregor said investigators are looking for a single killer, but that they had no motive or suspect to announce.
“We know there was other people out there last night that saw what occurred that haven’t come forward,” said McGregor. He urged witnesses to call Detective Vincent Miranti at (504) 712-2330 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
