A driver slammed into a pole that fell on a woman and killed her in the French Quarter early Sunday, New Orleans Police said.
The victim, who would have been 22 on Monday, was walking in the 400 block of Burgundy Street about 5:20 a.m. Sunday when an eastbound 1993 Nissan Maxima barrelled into a balcony pole.
The pole hit the victim on the head and she died at the scene. Police are withholding her name until they notify her family.
The driver, Tevest Vance, 37, tried to drive way, a news release says, but a good Samaritan stopped Vance when his car stalled.
New Orleans Police arrested Vance and booked him on a count of vehicular homicide. Blood and alcohol tests are pending.
