New Orleans police Thursday were investigating the shooting of a 22-year-old man who was assaulted while working on a home in Mid-City.
The shooting happened after 4 p.m. on North Salcedo Street, near the intersection of St. Peter Street.
Sgt. Nicholas Gernon, commander of the New Orleans Police Department’s Homicide Section, said the victim had been underneath the home at 617 North Salcedo Street “when the gunman (or suspects) walked up on him and started shooting at him. He said it was “too early to speculate” on what may have motivated the shooting. ‘
“We do have some people that saw some things, and they’re cooperating,” Gernon said.
Neighbors said they heard approximately 10 gunshots, but no fighting or arguing before the gunfire. “Somebody came by and shot him,” one woman said. “In broad daylight.”
The unidentified victim was taken to Interim LSU Hospital and rushed into surgery, but he was not expected to survive, authorities said. The Police Department initially said the victim died at the scene.
Detective Thomas Ripp is investigating the shooting and can be reached at (504) 658-5300.
