A Mississippi woman died of an apparent drowning after being hit by a wave off Grande Isle on Sunday, according to the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office.
Rhonda Holstine, 53, drowned after she was hit by a wave on Sunday, said Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich, the Jefferson Parish coroner.
“She was in the surf, apparently hit a wave, went under the water, and didn’t come up,” Cvitanovich said.
Grand Isle Police Chief Euris DuBois said the incident happened around noon Sunday on the beach near Oak Lane as Holstine swam with her son.
Beachgoers suddenly noticed the boy waving his arms in the air for help, according to DuBois. One of them, a doctor, swam out to Holstine and brought her back to the beach.
But both the man and paramedics failed to revive Holstine despite their efforts, DuBois said. The chief said that Holstine was from Horn Lake, a city in northern Mississippi near Memphis.
