JEFFERSON (AP) — State police says they have arrested the driver involved in a hit-and-run accident in Jefferson Parish that claimed the life of a 5-year-old boy.

Trooper Melissa Matey says the accident happened around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday on Jefferson Highway.

Matey says Jason Bauer Jr. was riding his bicycle across the highway, while his uncle, Robert Michel Jr., walked along side of him. As they crossed the center lane, Matey says a car driven by 22-year-old Steshondia Stackhouse of New Orleans struck Bauer and the bicycle. She says Stackhouse left the scene.

Bauer was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Matey says Stackhouse was booked with hit and run and no driver’s license.

The accident remains under investigation.
