Oyster farmer Mitchell Jurisich Jr. has been chosen as 2014 Orange King for the Plaquemines Parish Orange Fair & Festival, which will be held Dec. 5-7 at Historic Fort Jackson.

Jurisich, a native of Empire, is part of the third generation of his family to work in the oyster industry. After Hurricane Katrina, he served as a reserve deputy helping guard marinas and boat harbors against looters. After the BP oil spill, he attended meetings and media events to communicate the plight of oyster harvesters.

He is a member of the Farm Bureau of Louisiana, the Louisiana Oyster Dealers and Growers Association, and the Save Louisiana Coalition.
