New Orleans police officer Vernell Brown has died at the hospital from injuries sustained after he was hit by a car earlier this week, according to a New Orleans Police Department press release. He was 47.
Early Sunday Brown, a 17-year veteran of the force, was struck by a car and severely injured while investigating a vehicle fire on the Pontchartrain Expressway.
“It’s been a very hard couple of weeks,” New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison said in an interview Monday. “But I’m finding that our department is a resilient department, just like our city is a resilient city. It makes me proud to see that our men and women are not just laying down.”
The investigation into the initial incident is on going and no charges have been filed at this point.
Harrison will provide more information and comments on Saturday at the NOPD headquarters.
