Police arrest man in fatal stabbing

New Orleans police arrested a 33-year-old man in the fatal stabbing of a 25-year-old woman late Wednesday in Algiers.

Melvin Lopez was booked on a count of second-degree murder.

The stabbing happened shortly before midnight in the 200 block of Westpark Court. Officers found the woman inside a residence with several stab wounds. She died at the scene.

Police said Lopez was found in the doorway of the residence with a cut on his forehead and blood on his arms and shirt. After being treated at the hospital, he was taken into custody “based on information from witnesses on the scene and the fresh lacerations on his hands and fingers,” a release said.

Man booked in Quarter stabbings, robbery

New Orleans police late Wednesday arrested a 26-year-old man accused of stabbing two men and robbing another man in the French Quarter.

Jerico Miller was booked on two counts of aggravated battery and one count of armed robbery.

Miller stabbed a 36-year-old man in the back in the 1000 block of Decatur Street and a 43-year-old man in the 900 block of Royal Street, police said. They said he also robbed another 36-year-old man with a knife in the 600 block of St. Peter Street.

Miller was arrested in the 900 block of Royal Street. He confessed to all three crimes, telling officers he “thought someone was out to get him,” police said.

The stabbing victims’ injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Youth booked in Uptown carjacking

Police arrested a young man accused of carjacking a woman in Uptown New Orleans and forcing her to help him drive the vehicle because he could not operate a manual shift.

Anthony Watson, 17, one of two suspects accused in the robbery, was booked on counts of armed robbery, carjacking, use of a firearm in a robbery and simple kidnapping.

The carjacking happened about 11 p.m. Wednesday in the 1600 block of Coliseum Street. Police said one of the young men demanded the woman’s keys, wallet and phone while the other got into the driver’s seat.

The woman told authorities the driver could not operate the manual-shift vehicle and forced her at gunpoint to assist them. After driving around for several minutes, the woman, who was uninjured, was told to get out at Tchoupitoulas and Philip streets.

Police tracked the woman’s cellphone to South Robertson and Philip streets, where they found the stolen vehicle idling. Watson and the other young man fled on foot, police said. Watson was arrested, but his accomplice escaped, police said.

3 booked in Algiers crack cocaine bust

Police arrested three men in Algiers on Wednesday after officers received a tip that crack cocaine was being sold out of an apartment.

Tyrus Bartholomew, 24; Ellis Brown, 28; and Ryan Craig, 29, were booked on counts of possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine and possession of marijuana.

Detectives patrolling Algiers about 5:40 p.m. received a tip that drugs were being sold from an apartment in the 3400 block of Garden Oaks Drive. Officers said they found about 18 grams of crack cocaine in the residence, 12.5 grams of marijuana and more than $600 in cash.

One of the suspects tried to flush the drugs down the toilet as officers entered, police said.

Police probe pair of armed robberies

New Orleans police Thursday were investigating an armed robbery that happened in the 2500 block of Myrtle Street.

Police said a 37-year-old man had been “joyriding” on his birthday with two other men when two armed assailants demanded his money about 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

In another robbery early Wednesday in the 600 block of North Murat Street, two assailants took money from a 31-year-old man.

Police seek man in attempted murder

New Orleans police were looking for a 41-year-old man accused of trying to kill a woman during a domestic dispute.

Authorities said Donald Oliver tried to run a 22-year-old woman off Interstate 10 near Elysian Fields Avenue about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Police book two in unrelated stabbings

New Orleans police responded to a series of stabbings Wednesday, two of which resulted in arrests.

The first happened about 11:30 a.m. at Esplanade and North Claiborne avenues. Police said Roxanne Harts, 35, struck a 63-year-old man with a bottle, cutting him.

Another stabbing happened about 6:15 p.m. at Gov. Nicholls and North Johnson streets. Police said a 24-year-old man was stabbed by an unknown assailant.

The third stabbing happened about 7 p.m. in the 2200 block of North Derbigny Street. Police arrested Aarones Christophe, 26, who they said got into a fight with a 24-year-old woman and stabbed her several times with a knife.

SWAT team deployed in Uptown

A SWAT team was deployed to the 1700 block of Palmer Avenue on Thursday morning.

Police said a woman had been barricaded inside with a firearm before surrendering peacefully shortly before 7:30 a.m.

She was taken to a hospital for evaluation, police said.
