A long-rumored plan to move City Hall to the abandoned building that once housed Charity Hospital is moving forward.
A June 25 request from Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s administration to the city’s Property Management Department requests $300 million for the renovation of the hospital to house City Hall and the Civil District Court.
“The Civic Center will improve efficiency in city government by locating all city departments within on space and creating a better work space for the civil servants and reduce annual operating costs for maintenance,” the request says.
The request lists money from the state capital outlay budget, FEMA hazard mitigation grants and bonds as proposed sources of money. The request does not specify how much of each would be required.
The city has for years contemplated using the hospital, which did not open after flooding during Hurricane Katrina, as City Hall.
The request does not include any other details, such as design plans or future uses for the current City Hall.
