Youths decorated their own umbrellas and coconuts and joined in the Kids’ Second-Line Parade at the 15th annual Satchmo SummerFest on Aug. 1. The Treme Brass Band led the kids’ second-line out of the U.S. Mint and onto the Red Beans and Ricely Yours Stage.

Junior Zulus taught the youths about the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club traditions and the story of when Louis Armstrong was crowned King Zulu in 1949.

The Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans sponsored the umbrella decoration station so the youth could create their own keepsake to twirl in the parade as part of the New Orleans second-line tradition.

More than 35,000 people of all ages attended the annual free festival, which honors Armstrong, New Orleans’ native son.
