Police arrest suspect in Broad Street killing

New Orleans police arrested a 36-year-old man and booked him with second-degree murder following Sunday’s fatal shooting of a 33-year-old man in the 7th Ward.

Cornell Augustine was arrested Sunday afternoon in connection with the incident, which occurred about 1:10 a.m. in the 2000 block of North Broad Street, police said.

Police found the victim lying in the street, fatally shot, after responding to reports of shots fired in the area. His identity has not been released.

During their investigation, detectives learned that Augustine and the victim had been involved in a fight and that Augustine produced a handgun and shot him multiple times before fleeing, police said.

Augustine was located at a house in the 2400 block of D’Abadie Street. He was taken to police headquarters and questioned by detectives.

He cooperated with the detectives, police said, and was moved to Central Lockup and booked on second-degree murder.

Elderly woman killed by hit-and-run driver

A hit-and-run accident left a 72-year-old woman dead Sunday morning as she crossed Elysian Fields Avenue with her walker, and New Orleans police are looking for the driver involved.

Just before 3:30 a.m., a driver heading south on Elysian Fields at a high rate of speed struck the woman as she crossed the avenue at North Dorgenois Street, police said. The driver did not stop and continued south at a high rate of speed, police said.

The vehicle is described as a burnt orange early-model Ford Mustang with damage to the front of the car from the incident.

Men robbed at gunpoint in Treme

Two men were robbed at gunpoint Saturday afternoon while renovating a residence in the Treme neighborhood, New Orleans police said.

The men were working in the 2300 block of St. Philip Street just after 1 p.m. when an armed man came up to them and demanded money.

He fled after taking money from both victims.

Man arrested in cutting at French Quarter bar

A man was arrested in connection with a cutting that happened early Sunday morning in the French Quarter.

Byron Lombard, 31, was arrested after stabbing a bouncer at a club in the 500 block of Bourbon Street about 1:30 a.m., police said.

Lombard had been causing a disturbance in the club and the 37-year-old bouncer tried to remove him.

The bouncer was stabbed with a knife several times. Lombard was arrested at the scene, police said.
