New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Police Superintendent Michael Harrison attended a violent crime summit in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday hosted by U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

Lynch called the summit amid rising murder rates in cities like New Orleans. While the rates are nowhere near the cities’ 1990s peaks, they have raised alarm across the nation.

The Justice Department in recent weeks has steered more than $2 million in grants to the NOPD to help clear a backlog of rape kits and put more community police officers on the streets.

Landrieu called the violence an "epidemic" and commended the federal government for calling the summit.
