Motorcyclist killed in accident on high-rise

A motorcyclist was killed early Thursday when he slammed into the back of a van on the Interstate 10 high-rise bridge, New Orleans police said.

The 56-year-old victim, whose identity has not been released, was headed east when the accident happened about 1:30 a.m., said Officer Hilal Williams, a Police Department spokeswoman.

The man died at the scene. An autopsy is pending, as are blood and alcohol tests.

Man shot Thursday afternoon in Algiers

A 25-year-old man was shot in the back Thursday in Algiers, New Orleans police said.

The shooting occurred about 12:15 p.m. in an apartment complex in the 6100 block of Tullis Drive.

The wound was not life-threatening, and the victim drove himself to a hospital, police said.

N.O. police investigate carjackings, robberies

New Orleans police on Thursday were investigating the following armed robberies and carjackings reported in an overnight crime log:

  • 10:18 a.m. Wednesday in the 3400 block of Kabel Drive: A man walked into a business and demanded money. The 64-year-old victim handed over his cash, and the robber ran away.
  • 8:59 p.m. Wednesday in the 10000 block of Curran Boulevard: A woman was getting out of her car when two men walked up to her. They made the 30-year-old victim get on the ground and then took her purse and car.
  • 11:09 p.m. Wednesday in the 7100 block of Downman Road: A 25-year-old woman pulled into a driveway and left her car running. An unknown man walked up and got into the car. When the victim told the man to get away from her car, he pointed a gun at her and drove away.
  • 1:09 a.m. Thursday at Burgundy and Pauger streets: Two women, ages 29 and 22, were walking when a man approached them and ordered them to “give me all you have.” The robber got away with a purse, a cellphone and cash.
