Police arrested a teenager they said was shot by a homeowner while burglarizing a home in New Orleans East on Tuesday.

Imani Smith, 18, burglarized a house in the 6700 block of Foch Drive with two other suspects, police said. A woman inside locked herself in a room and called her father, who arrived with a gun. The father told police that he chased the burglars out of the house and into the backyard. He said he believed Smith was trying to pull a weapon on him, so he fired at him several times.

Smith was hit once in the thigh, but he managed to jump over a fence before collapsing in the 6700 block of Dorian Street. Police then arrived at the scene about 12:30 p.m.

Police said they found items from the home in Smith’s possession but no weapons. He will be booked when he is released from the hospital.

The homeowner has not been charged at this time.
