The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office has begun an internal inquiry into the inadvertent release of an inmate this week that authorities blamed on a “clerical error.”

Jeffrey Johnson, 30, was released from Orleans Parish Prison by mistake about 11:30 p.m. Monday, said Philip Stelly, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman. Stelly said a release document bearing a “similar folder number and name” had been placed on Johnson’s folder by mistake.

“The clerical error was discovered and immediately reported to appropriate authorities,” Stelly said.

Stelly said he had no information about why Johnson was in jail and what charges he faced. He said Johnson was scheduled to be released on “good time” July 9 but had a detainer to be transferred into federal custody upon his release.

Johnson turned himself in to law enforcement authorities at 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, some 16 hours after his release.

Asked why the Sheriff’s Office had not alerted the public to Johnson’s release sooner, Stelly said late Tuesday afternoon had been “the first opportunity to let the public know.”
