Attorney Danatus King will be honored as Person of the Year at the African American Leadership Project holds its annual Morris F.X. Jeff Jr. Community Service Awards Dinner at 7 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Watson Memorial Teaching Ministries, 4400 St. Charles Ave.
The African American Leadership Project is a community-based advocacy, planning and policy- and consensus-building network. It is honoring King for his long-standing record of unselfish, dedicated and consistent advocacy on behalf of marginalized communities and persons in the city.
The AALP will also honor The New Orleans Tribune newspaper and its publisher, Beverly McKenna, with its Institution of the Year Award for its outstanding reporting, incisive commentary and journalistic advocacy for social justice on behalf of those needing a voice.
The Community Business/Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award will go to Metro Services Group (aka Disposal) and its CEO, Jimmie Woods, for its sensitive and effective blending of social objectives and community service with its entrepreneurship and business objectives.
Entertainment will be provided by jazz/R&B songstress Sharon Martin and master drummer Baba Luther Gray. A $25 donation is requested for the awards dinner at the door.
