VFW EVENTS AT CHALMETTE NATIONAL CEMETERY: 12:30 p.m. The Vietnam War veterans of VFW Post 3798 will present a Memorial Day ceremony at Chalmette National Cemetery, 8606 W. St. Bernard Highway, Chalmette, featuring a color guard, bagpiper and remarks from post members. Vietnam War veterans buried in the cemetery and members of the post interred elsewhere will be honored.
NAVAL AIR STATION CEREMONY: 11 a.m. Branch 162 of the Fleet Reserve Association holds its Memorial Day two-bell ceremony at 703 Kepler St., Gretna. The commanding officer of the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base at Belle Chasse, Capt. Scott Gootee, will be the guest speaker. After the ceremony, there will be a picnic, with food and drinks furnished. All service members, veterans, retirees and their families are invited. The ceremony is open to the public.
SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA VETERANS CEMETERY: 11 a.m. An avenue of flags, color guard, playing of Taps, flag-plantings and wreath-laying by volunteer organizations at 34888 Grantham College Road, Slidell. Participating groups include the Northshore High School JROTC, Sons of the American Revolution, St. Tammany Parish President’s Veterans and Military Affairs Advisory Council, Knights of Columbus and Military Order of the Purple Heart. COVINGTON MEMORIAL PROGRAM: 10 a.m. Robert H. Burns American Legion Post 16 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at the Justice Center, 701 N. Columbia St. The ceremony will be followed by the annual Veterans Appreciation Reception beginning at 11 a.m. in Bogue Falaya Hall, Greater Covington Center, 317 N.
