It came down to a tie-breaker, but local oyster lover Adrian “The Rabbit” Morgan, of New Orleans, took the title in the Acme Oyster House World Oyster Eating Championship at the 2016 New Orleans Oyster Festival. The second-place finisher, Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, of Alexandria, Virginia, had won the competition the previous 10 years.

After the first round of competition, Morgan and Thomas had each consumed 44 dozen Louisiana oysters in 8 minutes. To break the tie, they bellied up to the oyster bar again for 2 dozen more oysters, which Morgan slurped down fastest. The third-place finisher was Michelle “Cardboard Shell” Lesco, of Tucson, Arizona, with 32 dozen oysters.

The P&J Oyster Shucking Competition at the 2016 New Orleans Oyster Festival was decided by who could shuck the most oysters in two minutes. The winners were Jay Gallette, Superior Seafood & Oyster Bar, first with 19 oysters; Honor Allen, Hunt’s Oyster Bar & Seafood Restaurant in Panama City, Florida, second with 16 oysters; and Gus Marshall, Desire Oyster Bar at the Royal Sonesta New Orleans, third with 15 oysters.
