A woman died early Tuesday morning in a single-car accident a short distance from her home on Bonnabel Boulevard in Metairie, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said in a release.

Madelyn Apken, 57, was driving a 2009 Hyundai Sonata from the South I-10 Service Road onto Bonnabel Boulevard when it crossed a lawn and hit a curb, police said. The vehicle then went airborne, struck a tree on a neutral ground, and turned over. Apken, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died on the scene.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators have not yet determined the cause of the crash, which occurred at around 1:45 a.m.
