The food, music and culture of the Mississippi River delta were highlighted during the Downriver Festival on Sept. 12 at the Old U.S. Mint and in the French Market.

The one-day event, with a “Rum & Sugar” theme, was produced by The Louisiana State Museum, Friends of the Cabildo, French Market Corporation and the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.

Inside the Old U.S. Mint, historians and authors discussed tropical foodways, female bootleggers and the history of the sugar and rum trades.
