Sarah Gamard, a student at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, won first place at Southern University’s fourth annual Pinkie Gordon Lane Poetry Contest awards program May 2 in the John B. Cade Library on the Baton Rouge campus.

High school students from across the state were invited to participate in contest, said Emma B. Perry, dean of libraries at Southern.

The other top finishers were: Emmaline Rice, Caddo Magnet High School, second place; Clara Souvignier, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, third place; and Eleanor Stern, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, fourth place.

Those receiving honorable mentions were Alidia Findley, Baton Rouge Magnet High School; Genevieve Lovern, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts; Sam Wallace, McKinley High School in Baton Rouge; and Madeleine Yates, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts.
