The stage is set for a big political fight in this small Jefferson Parish city after the new mayor stripped City Council members of their taxpayer-financed health insurance and her city attorney suddenly resigned.
Harahan Mayor Tina Miceli took away the health insurance from the City Council as of July 1 after City Attorney Tommy Anzelmo Jr. found the insurance was granted improperly by the previous mayor. The City Council wants it back.
The City Council unanimously approved a $5.9 million spending plan that gives the police and fire departments almost all of what they requested in June.
Miceli inherited an operating deficit of well over $1 million and worked through the first half of the year getting the city’s financial house in order.
