Alexander Walker and Kyle Bush, both eighth-graders at Ruppel Academy for Advanced Studies in Gretna, are two of five winners in a national writing contest sponsored by Scholastic Magazine.
The students researched the Mary Beth Tinker story. Tinker protested the Vietnam War in 1965. Her protest landed her in the principal’s office and eventually in the Supreme Court.
The students were asked to compose an essay about a topic that they would be willing to stand up for the same way that Mary Beth Tinker did.
Ruppel is proud to have two of the five winners in a national writing contest. For information, visit ruppel. jpschools.org.
