A funeral will be held Saturday for Rudy Lombard, a New Orleans civil rights activist who died last weekend.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel, 3933 Washington Ave.

The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at New Zion Baptist Church, 2319 Third St. Visitation at the church will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Burial will be private.

Lombard, 75, died Saturday of complications from pancreatic cancer.

He was arrested in 1960 during a sit-in at the lunch counter of a Canal Street dime store. His conviction later was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

He ran for mayor in 1986 and spent the past 20 years or so in Evanston, Illinois, where he worked as a research scientist for NorthShore University HealthSystem, focusing on prostate cancer, which he was diagnosed with a decade ago.
