Man found dead in lot on Montegut Street

An unidentified man was found dead with a gunshot wound to the chest Friday in a vacant lot on a desolate stretch of the 2400 block of Montegut Street in New Orleans.

Officers responding to a call about noon found the man clad in only his underwear and a shirt, according to Officer Frank Robertson, a spokesman for the New Orleans Police Department. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

St. Charles Parish man found guilty of murder

A jury found 22-year-old Leslie Reed guilty of second-degree murder in the 2012 killing of Jaredy Mealey, St. Charles Parish District Attorney Joel Chaisson announced.

Mealey was 19 when he was killed in St. Rose.

His parents were present in the courtroom throughout the trial and when the verdict was announced Thursday night, Chaisson’s office said.

Crimestoppers tip leads to drug bust

A Crimestoppers tip, surveillance, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Homeland Security led New Orleans police to arrest 32-year-old Christian Prechter on an array of drug charges Thursday.

Police said someone called the tip line to state that drugs were being sold at a house in the 1400 block of Verna Court, just off Esplanade Avenue. Police said they were preparing a warrant when they conducted what they described as a narcotics stop on Prechter’s vehicle and found him with 12 OxyContin tablets.

After securing a search warrant, police said, the house was searched. Police said detectives found two pounds of hallucinogenic mushrooms, one pound of hash, seven grams of LSD and $1,800 in cash.

Prechter was booked on possession with the intent to distribute narcotics.

Man, woman shot Friday in Central City

A man and woman were shot about 2 a.m. Friday near Danneel and Josephine streets in Central City, according to New Orleans police.

Both victims were taken to the hospital.

Rape reported Thursday in Gentilly

A person was sexually assaulted in the 2200 block of Robert E. Lee Boulevard, police reported.

The rape was reported about 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

Stabbing reported Thursday morning

Police said a 21-year-old man was stabbed multiple times early Thursday morning.

The man was involved in an argument with another man in the 3400 block of North Claiborne Avenue that turned violent about 4 a.m.
