MG Walk is set for March 5
The fifth annual New Orleans Myasthenia Gravis Walk is March 5 at Lafreniere Park, 3000 Downs Blvd., Metairie.
Registration for the 1-mile and 3-mile walks will begin at 9 a.m., and the walks are at 10 a.m. You can also register in advance at www.mgwalk.org/neworleans.
The event has raised more than $150,000 locally in the previous four years, and nationally, MG Walks in 35 cities have raised more $3 million to find a cure for the neuromuscular disease.
Myasthenia Gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that is characterized by fluctuating weakness of the voluntary muscle groups. Muscles that control eye movements, blinking, chewing, swallowing, breathing, coughing and facial expression, as well as the arms and legs, can be affected.
Old Jefferson resident Charlene Watkins has been selected as the New Orleans MG Walk Hero.
“Myasthenia gravis is a condition that is invisible,” said Watkins, who has had MG since 2005. “You may look perfectly OK to some, but you’re really not. When you try to explain, no one understands it. I want people to learn more. I want to help people who aren’t yet diagnosed, or are misdiagnosed, to get answers and support.”
Following the walk, there will be entertainment, a photo booth, refreshments and food including jambalaya, hot dogs, fruit and snacks.
For more information about the walk, call Tommy Santora at (504) 376-7474 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org
