The suspected gunman responsible for wounding a 4-year-old boy and killing his grandmother in their New Orleans East home has been arrested.
Thomas Lam, 23 was picked up Friday afternoon in the 500 block of Bragg Street, said officer Garry Flot, a Police Department spokesman. Lam has refused to cooperate with police, but investigators believe the motive for the shooting was robbery and drug related.
Police did not say if they believe 44-year-old Helene Jackson-Smith was the intended target.
Jackson-Smith and her grandson were in their home in the 13000 block of Maple Wood Drive when the shooting happened about 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Jackson-Smith was shot multiple times and died on the scene. Her grandson was shot to the face. He remained hospitalized on Friday, police said.
“This was another case where a suspect recklessly fired a weapon, wounding anyone who happened to be in his path, including a 4-year-old boy,” Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said in a prepared statement. “Criminals like this don’t deserve to walk freely among us in our neighborhoods.”
