Scooter crash kills woman, 44, on I-10
Metairie — A woman died Monday afternoon when she crashed her scooter while trying to get onto Interstate 10 in Metairie.
Paula A. Noto, 44, died after her scooter crashed into a concrete barrier while traveling on the eastbound on-ramp at Causeway Boulevard, according to State Police Trooper Melissa Matey. Matey said Noto was ejected from the scooter and flew over the barrier, landing in traffic on the interstate.
Troopers were still investigating the crash but impairment and speed are not suspected in the incident. Noto was wearing a helmet.
Train crash kills one in Slidell crossing
Slidell — Slidell police are investigating their second fatal train crash in the past two months after a woman was killed Sunday night.
Bonnie Gibbs, 57, died after she left her car to escape an oncoming train at Front Street and Lafayette Street.
Her vehicle had gotten stuck in the gravel on the side of the tracks when she accidentally drove off the road, said Detective Daniel Seuzeneau, a police spokesman. She exited her car to escape an oncoming train, but when the train hit her car, the car then struck her.
Investigators do not believe impairment was involved in the incident.
In March, Jamii Pizzitolo was killed at Front Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, Seuzeneau said. A train struck her vehicle in a head-on collision, and police believe impairment was involved in that incident.
Gym bag closes downtown streets
New Orleans — The impact of the Boston Marathon bombing is still being felt after police shut down several downtown streets Monday morning because of an unattended gym bag.
Police say the incident was reported shortly before 6 a.m.
Police received a call of a gym bag left in the 800 block of Common Street.
Officer Garry Flot said police shut down several nearby streets for a few hours, but when they examined the bag, it was determined nothing was inside.
Man, 24, wounded in Kenner shooting
Kenner — Police found a 24-year-old Kenner man police riddled with bullets about 3:18 a.m. Monday.
Investigators found the victim sitting inside his car after it crashed into a fence in the 3000 block of Phoenix Street, said Sgt. Brian McGregor, a police spokesman.
No motive or suspects have been released in the incident, which left the victim in critical condition.
Robbery reported near crack house
New Orleans — Police are investigating a robbery in a crack house on Sunday morning that investigators said was tied to one man’s refusal to purchase crack.
According a police report, the 53-year-old man told investigators he was in a crack house at the Bienville Street and North Tonti Street shortly before 5:12 a.m. The man said two unidentified men approached him and asked him if he’d be interested in purchasing crack.
When the victim demurred, police say one man struck the victim in the head multiple times with a gun. The robbers then stole the man’s wallet and cash, according to the report.
The victim was taken to a local hospital with head wounds.
Woman accused of attempted murder
New Orleans — Police arrested a 45-year-old woman after they said she tried to run over a man with her car after an argument.
The incident was reported at North Claiborne Avenue and Tricou Street about 2:02 a.m.
Police said the 29-year-old victim argued with Sandoricka Clark, then they started fighting, according to a police report. Clark is accused of getting into a car and striking the man, who was taken to local hospital.
Gun repair ends in death of man, 26
New Orleans- A 26-year-old man’s decision to repair his former girlfriend’s gun this weekend ended tragically with his death, according to police.
Investigators say the man was repairing a gun in the 1400 block of Elysian Fields around 1:17 a.m.
The gun went off and wounded the man in the left thigh. He bled to death at the scene.
Armed robber disarmed by victim
New Orleans — A New Orleans man managed to take a would-be robber’s shotgun early Saturday morning.
Police say the incident was reported around 5:16 a.m. in the 1900 block of Burgundy Street.
According to a police report, the 31-year-old man was approached by a man with a shotgun who demanded his wallet.
The victim took the gun from the robber, who then ran away.
Motorcycle crash kills man on La. 3188
LAPLACE — Louisiana State Police investigated a crash that killed Gary Joseph, 28, on La. 3188 around 1:25 p.m. Sunday, according to Trooper Melissa Matey, a State Police spokeswoman.
Investigators believe Joseph was driving his 2012 Yamaha RZFR1 at a high rate of speed, when he lost control in a curve.
He crossed the median, struck two road signs and died at a local hospital.
