The New Orleans Police Department announced Monday night that it has placed officer James Cunningham on emergency suspension without pay for his involvement in a domestic incident Monday morning in the 500 block of Patterson Drive.

The NOPD said Cunningham was involved in “a verbal altercation with a female victim that turned physical.” The woman said he grabbed her, threatened her and refused to allow her to leave the residence, the NOPD said in a news release.

Cunningham, an eight-year veteran, was arrested by members of the Public Integrity Bureau and booked on counts of domestic abuse battery and false imprisonment.

He has been on administrative reassignment since a previous arrest on Jan. 13 on counts of simple battery and home invasion.
