National Business Women’s Week is an annual celebration during the third week of October. Created in 1928, the week-long event facilitates discussions on workplace issues and raises awareness of resources available for working women. It also honors hard-working ladies for their contributions to their workplaces and communities.

According to Wanda Alcon, St. Bernard BPW president, each year the club honors working women who live and/or work in St. Bernard Parish who possess the qualities they admire in a good role model.

This year’s honoree, Leonarda “NaNa” Tommaseo Gioe, was recognized as a Model Working Woman at the club’s recent anniversary party.

Gioe, 88, is co-owner and a cook at Rocky and Carlo’s Restaurant in Chalmette. Gioe, a native of Alcamo, Sicily, began her career at the restaurant in 1955 when her husband, Calogero (Carlo) Gioe, and her brother, Rocky Tommaseo, first opened its doors.

“The kitchen is my world. I never want to be any other place. This is what I do,” said Gioe, who often works 12- to 14-hour days at the restaurant.
