Moped driver dies in crash in St. Bernard

A 33-year-old St. Bernard Parish man was killed Thursday afternoon when the moped he was driving collided with a van, according to State Police.

Joshua Drakain was driving a 2013 Taoi moped east on La. 300 approaching Deborah Drive about 2:45 p.m. A 2001 Chevrolet Astro van, driven by Joel Edward, 29, also of St. Bernard Parish, was traveling north on Deborah Drive.

The van turned right onto La. 300 into the path of the moped, State Police said. The moped struck the rear of the van, and Drakain was ejected. He was transported to the Interim LSU Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

State Police said Edward submitted to a breath test and no detectable alcohol was found. Drakain was not believed to be impaired, State Police said. However, toxicology results on both men are pending. Drakain was not wearing a helmet at the time.

The crash remains under investigation and criminal charges are pending, State Police said.

Shooting in Algiers leaves 1 wounded

A 19-year-old man was shot in the leg about 12:15 p.m. Friday in Algiers. His wounds were not life-threatening, police said.

The incident occurred in the 700 block of Hendee Street.

Man shot Friday in Uptown New Orleans

A 20-year-old man was taken to a hospital Friday afternoon after he was shot in Uptown New Orleans.

The New Orleans Police Department said the victim was shot in the hip in the 2700 block of Soniat Street just after 2 p.m.

Police arrest teen on a gun count

New Orleans police arrested a 14-year-old male Wednesday on counts of illegal carrying of a firearm and resisting an officer.

The incident happened about 9:20 p.m. at Pinewood Court and Cypress Acres Drive in Algiers.

Officers arrived in the area after shots were fired nearby and spotted the youth running away. After a brief chase, they arrested the youth.

SWAT called in for barricaded man

Bobby Hammond, 37, surrendered to a SWAT unit after a standoff of several hours Friday morning in New Orleans East.

Hammond barricaded himself inside a hotel room after he damaged someone’s property, according to police.

The incident occurred in the 7800 block of Chef Menteur Highway; no one was injured.

Police said he would be booked on counts of making threats, criminal damage to property and a parole violation.

Police seek three in Wednesday robbery

Police are looking for three men in connection with a robbery Wednesday at Ursulines Avenue and North Derbigny Street.

A 64-year-old man was walking on Ursulines about 10:30 a.m. when one of the robbers approached him and said, “Give it up,” according to police.

The two other men then approached the victim from behind and stole $450 in cash from him, according to police.

Tire theft suspect is on the loose

Police are looking for a man wanted for stealing a spare tire.

According to police, the man pulled up behind a parked 2004 Jeep Liberty about 6:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at Burgundy and Kerlerec streets. He then proceeded to steal the victim’s spare tire before driving off.

Man robbed Thursday on Conti Street

A 22-year-old man was robbed about 3 p.m. Thursday in the 2600 block of Conti Street.

The victim was approached by another man who produced a gun and demanded money. The robber took his wallet and fled.

Armed robber gets $500 on Tulane Avenue

A 30-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint about 8 p.m. Thursday in the 3200 block of Tulane Avenue.

The victim was approached by a man who pointed a gun at him and demanded his money, according to police. The robber fled with $500 in cash.

Carjacking reported in Central City

Two women had their car stolen in Central City about 9 p.m. Thursday.

The victims were approached in the 1900 block of Terpsichore Street by two men who demanded the keys to their car, according to police.

The vehicle was later recovered in Gretna.

Three men rob woman Friday, tape her to man

Three armed men robbed a woman Friday morning, forced her into her home and duct-taped her to a 22-year-old man, New Orleans police said.

The incident happened about 4 a.m. in the 600 block of Reynes Street in the Holy Cross neighborhood.

The 41-year-old woman was loading clothes into her vehicle when the group of robbers approached her, police said. The robbers allegedly fled in the woman’s vehicle.
