Slidell — Slidell Police arrested the owner of a pet grooming salon in the city after employees reported that she abused the animals she groomed by beating them, choking them and hanging them.

Christina Stewart, 42, was booked with aggravated cruelty to animals at the conclusion of an investigation that began in January, according to assistant public information officer Daniel Seuzeneau. Stewart, owner of A Jazzy Dog grooming salon on Pontchartrain Drive, was arrested there Friday.

Two employees filed a complaint with police in January alleging that Stewart would frequently slam dogs into grooming tables and choke them with a leash, Seuzeneau said. She also hung a dog by the neck until it had a seizure, he said.

During the investigation, a former employee approached officers and told them she left the business after one day because she saw Stewart abuse an elderly dog. She told police that when the dog wouldn’t stand on the table, Stewart slammed him into the table and then pushed another dog off the table so that it dangled by its leash.

When detectives questioned Stewart about the allegations, police said she denied any abuse and said she only disciplined the animals if they misbehaved.

Police are asking those who think their pet may have been abused at the salon to call (985) 646-4347.
