Volunteers gathered Friday to place American flags on more than 10,000 headstones in the Chalmette National Cemetery.

In honor of Memorial Day, members of the Vietnam Veterans of VFW Post 3798, the National Park Service and the National WWII Museum joined to honor America’s fallen troops with a special program at Chalmette Battlefield.

Special recognition was given to the 150th anniversary of Chalmette National Cemetery, founded May 1864.
