New Orleans Advocate photographer Matthew Hinton was awarded second place by the National Press Photographers Association in this year’s Best of Photojournalism Contest, the group said this week.
The contest, which draws thousands of submissions from photojournalists around the world, honored Hinton in the Sports Feature category for a picture that captured New Orleans Saints players praying over running back Khiry Robinson, who had been injured on a play.
In a game against the New York Giants that would turn out to be one of the highest-scoring in NFL history, Robinson was tackled near the Giants endzone and broke his leg.
Hinton’s photo shows Robinson splayed on the ground in pain, his teammates laying their hands on his face and chest as they pray for him.
First place in the Sports Feature category went to Mark Blinch, of Canadian Press. Fei Maohua, of China’s Xinhua News Agency, took third place, and Alexey Filippov, of Sputnikimages.com, Joel Marklund, of Bildbyran, and Charles Krupa, of The Associated Press, won honorable mentions.
