Orleans schools expo planned for Saturday

The 2013 Schools Expo on Orleans Parish schools, sponsored by the Urban League Parent Information Center, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the plaza level of the Superdome.

There will be information on the One App application process, how to apply to voucher schools and help with preschool child care.

De La Salle raises $3,000 in fundraisers

De La Salle High School raised $3,000 for the American Heart Association through T-shirt sales, jelly bean guessing contests, a dance video and other fundraisers.

Members of the student body and faculty conducted the fundraiser in memory of Chad Barcia, of the Class of 2006, who died suddenly in his junior year of a previously undiagnosed congenital heart defect.

In addition to the money for the Heart Association, the school donated $250 to the Chad Barcia Foundation, begun by Chad’s parents, Nancy and A.J. Barcia.

Competition features new, young artists

Gamma Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., in conjunction with The Gamma Rho Foundation, Inc., will host its annual talent competition Saturday at the Suite Restaurant & Jazz Club, 3580 Holiday Drive, Algiers.

The competition invites ninth- through 12th-graders. Winners of the competition are awarded monetary scholarships, recognition for their talents, and an opportunity to compete on the district and national level. Categories include: vocal and instrumental, classical, gospel and jazz music; ballet, modern dance and tap; speech and visual arts.

Magazine earnsliterary accolade

Brother Martin High School’s literary magazine, the Pen and Sword, received a rank of Excellent from the 2012 National Council of Teachers of English, competing against 417 other schools.

Tom Leggett is faculty adviser, and the 2011-12 staff was David Judd of New Orleans, Austin Krieger of Destrehan, David Miranda of Kenner, Ethan Olsen of Belle Chasse, Alan Pham of Avondale, Thomas Ridgley of Metairie, Nicholas Teague of New Orleans, and Corey Walsh of Metairie.

Bro. Martin competes in math team meet

In recent math team competition, Brother Martin’s Justin Levy of Metairie placed first in Algebra 1, Chris Maheu of New Orleans placed second in Calculus and Fritz Newburger of Metairie took honorable mention in Algebra 2. On team tests, Will Fernandez of Kenner, Chris Maheu and Nicholas Brondum of Metairie took honorable mention in the Potpourri category.

‘Riders’ exhibit stops at St. Mary’s school

St. Mary’s Academy, 6905 Chef Menteur Blvd., Gentilly, will host a national traveling exhibition on the Freedom Riders Feb. 18-22.

The exhibition, companion to a May 2011 broadcast of “American Experience” on PBS, looks at six months in 1961 when more than 400 courageous Americans, old and young, black and white, men and women, Northern and Southern, risked their lives to challenge segregated facilities in the South.The exhibit is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call Michelle Ochillo at (504) 245-0200.
