The New Orleans Fire Department said Wednesday that it and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are monitoring a new marsh fire in eastern Orleans Parish.

Witnesses reported seeing a lighting strike in an area known as Brazilier Island that ultimately caused about 50 acres of marsh to catch fire. The area involved is adjacent to U.S. 90 between the Chef Menteur Pass and Rigolets Pass bridges.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has been asked to place caution signs in the area warning motorists of potential hazards from the smoke.
