Police say a young man suffering from bipolar disorder has been arrested for setting fire to his mother’s house in Arabi on Thursday, sending her to the hospital with smoke inhalation.
Around 11 a.m., 19-year-old Joseph Andrews set fire to the house on Coney Drive, police said. When firefighters and police arrived on the scene they found a neighbor tending to Andrews’ unresponsive mother, 35-year-old Jomeca Hawkins. When she was revived, police said, Hawkins told them that her son had set the fire to kill her.
Deputies found Andrews several blocks away with two knives on him, Sheriff James Pohlmann said in a news release.
He has been booked with attempted murder and aggravated arson and is being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison.
