Belle Chasse — A Plaquemines Parish sheriff’s deputy was arrested Friday after authorities say he sexually assaulted a woman he arrested earlier this year.

Elijah Gary, 29, of Port Sulphur, was booked with sexual battery and malfeasance in office at the end of a nearly two-month investigation. He’s being held at the Belle Chasse lock-up in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Authorities say that on Nov. 20 the Sheriff’s Office began investigating Gary after a 29-year-old woman said he sexually assaulted her after arresting her. The woman said the assault occurred when Gary delivered her to the jail and was processing her as a prisoner, said Commander Eric Becnel, a sheriff’s spokesman. He would not discuss exactly what type of assault occurred.

The victim reported the incident while being transported to another location. Authorities collected DNA evidence from the victim, and that evidence was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for testing.

Becnel said authorities recently linked that DNA to Gary. Gary, who has been terminated, had worked for the Sheriff’s Office since 2007, and when he was arrested he worked in the Second District.

Sheriff Lonnie Greco said the arrest is proof of his commitment to accountability and transparency in the Sheriff’s Office.
