An Uptown home caught fire Wednesday afternoon near Freret Street and Nashville Avenue.

Firefighters needed more than a half-hour to bring the blaze under control, according to the New Orleans Fire Department. The fire began about 2:45 p.m. at 5940 Freret St., an apartment building with six units and 11 residents.

Not all of the units had functioning smoke alarms.

Authorities said one resident cut his foot trying to put out the fire and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

None of the 49 fire personnel who responded was injured, according to the Fire Department.

The cause of the blaze, which began on the second floor and spread to the attic apartment, remained under investigation.
