The Housing Authority of New Orleans police officer who was killed on Sunday morning in Central City has been identified as James Bennett, 45.
Police said Bennett was killed while patrolling the Guste Homes public housing complex.
In an online profile, Bennett described himself as a retired patrol sergeant for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. He had served with HANO’s small police force since 2013.
There appeared to be few or no witnesses to the killing in the darkened 2300 block of Erato Street. No additional information had been released Monday in what Mayor Mitch Landrieu called a “heinous assault.”
“As this death is the subject of an ongoing investigation, there will be no further information released at present,” Coroner Jeffrey Rouse said in a statement.
