New Orleans police are investigating the murder of a 25-year-old woman shot dead in the streets of Treme early Tuesday.

Police said witnesses reported hearing the woman arguing with three men on bicycles at around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of Esplanade Avenue and North Roman Street. The argument was followed by the sound of gunfire.

A witness found the woman lying on her back, unresponsive, on the neutral ground, and called police. She had an unspecified number of gunshot wounds to the body. Emergency medical technicians pronounced her dead on the scene.

Witnesses said the suspects fled on bicycles. No detailed descriptions of the men were immediately available.

Homicide Detective Gregory Johnson is in charge of the investigation.
