Advocate Staff Photo by JOHN MCCUSKER -- A tractor-trailer struck part of the Claiborne Avenue bridge over the industrial canal Tuesday, November 4, 2014. The incident shut down the bridge in both directions.

Both sides of the Claiborne Avenue bridge over the Industrial Canal were closed late Tuesday morning after an accident, New Orleans police said.

The closure was reported about 11:30 a.m.

Office Garry Flot, an NOPD spokesman, said an 18-wheeler struck the bridge. The truck was headed from the Lower 9th Ward side of the canal to the St. Claude side.

A picture a driver sent to WWL-TV showed what appeared to be a beams that snapped and fell across both spans.

Police reported no injuries and did not say when the bridge may reopen.

The St. Claude Avenue bridge is an alternative route in the meantime.
