The accident happened about 9 p.m. near the Westbank Expressway and Westwood Drive.

The cyclist, whose name has not been released pending notification of family, was trying to cross the eastbound lanes of the expressway when a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix swerved in an effort to avoid hitting the cyclist.

The driver, identified as 44-year-old Corey McCall, control of the car, hit the cyclist in the center lane and came to a stop after hitting a stop sign, said Troop B spokeswoman Melissa Matey.

A breath test found no detectable alcohol in McCall’s system, however speed might have been a factor, Matey said.

Investigators suspect the cyclist was impaired, Matey said. Toxicology tests are pending.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at West Jefferson Medical Center.
