Man, 33, booked in New Orleans East rape
New Orleans police arrested a 33-year-old man accused of choking and raping a woman Monday.
Leroy Haynes was booked into Orleans Parish Prison on one count of forcible rape.
Police said the rape happened after midnight Monday in the 7000 block of Bundy Road.
They said Haynes went to the woman’s home and got into a fight with her. The woman told police that Haynes choked and sexually assaulted her before leaving.
Responding officers found him in the area and took him into custody. They said the woman identified him as her assailant.
Chalmette man dies in single-vehicle crash
A Chalmette man was killed Tuesday after veering off East St. Bernard Highway and striking a utility pole.
Kerry Lemoine, 53, who was driving a Ford truck westbound, crashed into the pole shortly before 7 a.m. near Pelitere Drive, State Police said.
Lemoine was pronounced dead at St. Bernard Parish Hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt.
JPSO: Woman killed in Metairie crash
A woman was killed early Tuesday in a single-car crash close to her home in Metairie, authorities said.
Madelyn Apken, 57, was driving a 2009 Hyundai Sonata from the South I-10 Service Road onto Bonnabel Boulevard when she crossed a lawn and hit a curb, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The vehicle then went airborne, struck a tree on a neutral ground and overturned. Apken, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.
Investigators have not determined the cause of the crash, which happened about 1:45 a.m.
Kenner man shot in attempted stick-up
A Kenner man was shot in the back Monday night during an attempted robbery, police said.
The shooting happened about 9 p.m. in the 2600 block of Helena Street.
Kenner police said six young men accosted a 21-year-old man outside his residence and demanded money. One of them struck the man in the face, while another pointed a gun at him, police said.
The victim ran away but was struck in the upper back when the gunman opened fire, police said. He was taken to Interim LSU Hospital in New Orleans, where he was listed in stable condition.

NOPD investigates two armed robberies
New Orleans police Tuesday were investigating an armed robbery that happened in the Bywater neighborhood.
Police said a 28-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man were robbed about 12:45 a.m. near Dauphine and Piety streets.
A separate armed robbery happened about 7 a.m. Monday in the 3600 block of Iberville Street.
A 24-year-old man was walking to his vehicle when two assailants, riding bicycles and wearing construction vests, robbed him of his keys, money and cellphone, police said.
He struggled with one of the robbers over a firearm, police said, while the second man struck him from behind.
Man, 23, sought in domestic violence case
A 23-year-old man is accused of beating and strangling an ex-girlfriend, 32, about 11:30 p.m. April 2 near Tulane Avenue and South Clark Street.
Police said Brehk Veitenheimer was driving the woman when he got angry and punched her in the face repeatedly and began choking her until she nearly lost consciousness.
He allegedly dragged the woman out of his truck and left her on the street.
Police said Veitenheimer may have left the city.
Violet man booked in rape of juvenile
Authorities in St. Bernard Parish have arrested a Violet man accused of raping a juvenile.
James Johnson, 43, was booked on one count of aggravated rape and was being held on $400,000 bail.
Johnson was taken into custody Friday after the boy told a family member that Johnson had forced him to perform a sex act a day earlier.
